I hear the same question every month: "What exactly happens at the workshop? Is it a class? A sales pitch? Do I need to be in shape to come?"
It's a fair question. There are a lot of free seminars out there that turn into ninety minutes of someone trying to sell you something. This one is different — and I want you to know exactly what you're walking into before you show up.
So let me walk you through it, start to finish.
Why We Do This Every Month
Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death in adults over 65. One in four older adults falls every year. And the majority of those falls are preventable — not with grab bars alone, not with better lighting alone, but with stronger legs, better balance, and the body awareness to catch yourself before you hit the ground.
Most people don't learn those skills because nobody ever taught them. That's the gap this workshop fills. It's free because the information shouldn't be locked behind a membership fee. Every adult 55+ in the Memphis and Olive Branch area deserves to have it.

What the Workshop Looks Like
We meet on the first Saturday of every month at 10:00 AM at our facility at 7105 Cockrum Rd, Building 8953, in Olive Branch. Plan for about 60 to 75 minutes. Here's how it flows:
We Start With the Truth About Falls
The first fifteen minutes are about understanding why falls happen — and it's not what most people think. It's not just icy driveways or loose rugs. The real culprit is a gradual decline in leg strength, reaction time, and balance that happens so slowly most people don't notice it until a stumble turns into something serious.
I walk everyone through a simple self-assessment — no equipment needed — that gives you a clear picture of where you stand today. Some people are surprised by what they find. Others come in already knowing they've been losing confidence on stairs or uneven ground. Either way, we start with honest information.
You'll Move — But Not Like You Think
This is not a boot camp. Nobody is running sprints or doing burpees. What we do is gentle, purposeful movement that targets the exact muscles and systems responsible for keeping you upright.
We cover:
- Single-leg balance holds — the single most effective exercise for fall prevention, and you can do it holding a chair
- Heel-to-toe walking — trains the neurological pathways that keep you steady on uneven surfaces
- Sit-to-stand without hands — builds the quad and glute strength that catches you when you stumble
- Ankle circles and hip hinges — restores range of motion that tends to stiffen with age
Every exercise has a beginner modification. If you use a cane or walker, you can still participate fully. The goal is to give you a toolkit you can use at home starting that same day.
Home Safety You Can Actually Act On
We spend about fifteen minutes on the home environment — specifically, the changes that eliminate the most common fall hazards. Most of them cost less than thirty dollars and take an afternoon to fix.
We cover bathroom grab bars, stair lighting, rug removal and replacement options, footwear choices, and how to rearrange furniture to create clear pathways. I also give everyone a printed checklist they can take home and go room by room.
What to Do If You Fall
This is the part nobody likes to think about, but it might be the most valuable fifteen minutes of the morning. If a fall does happen, knowing how to land safely, how to assess yourself before you try to get up, and how to call for help — these things can be the difference between a bruise and a broken hip.
We practice safe falling techniques, how to get up from the floor when no one is around, and how to set up a simple fall alert system at home.
"Knowing what to do if you fall — before it happens — can be the difference between a bruise and a broken hip."
Your Personalized Action Plan
We close with ten minutes one-on-one. Every attendee gets a brief conversation with me about what they specifically should focus on — based on what came up during the self-assessment and the movement portion of the morning. You leave with a written 10-minute daily routine tailored to your current level.
That's it. No upsell. No pressure. You can come back every month if you want — the information deepens each time, and the community of regulars has become one of the best parts of what we do here.
Who Should Come
The workshop is designed for adults 55 and older — but we regularly have attendees in their 70s and 80s, and we've had people bring a parent in their 90s. If any of the following sounds familiar, this workshop is for you:
- You've had a fall or near-fall in the last year
- You've noticed yourself grabbing walls or furniture more often
- You're less confident on stairs, uneven ground, or in the dark
- A family member has expressed concern about your balance
- You want to stay independent and are looking for a place to start
We also welcome family members and caregivers. Some of our most impactful mornings have been when an adult child comes with their parent — it opens up conversations that are otherwise hard to have at home.
How to Reserve Your Spot
Seats are limited to keep the group small and the experience personal. The best way to secure yours is to call us at (901) 270-8224 or fill out the short form on the Workshop page and we'll confirm your spot within 24 hours.
The workshop is completely free. There is no obligation to join any program. If you decide afterward that you want to explore what coaching looks like, I'm happy to talk — but that conversation happens only if you want it to.
The first Saturday of every month. 10:00 AM. Olive Branch, MS.
I'd love to see you there.
